Workshops & Employer Recruiting
Creative Job Search (CJS) is generally recommended prior to Networking and
Interviewing and Resume Strategies workshops if: it has been a while since
you have looked for work as it is the foundation for these courses.
The other classes go in more detail but utilize the same CJS manual.
However, if:
1.you have a resume you can bring to the Resume workshop or a
list of your skills and accomplishments, then you don't need
to take CJS. To identify your skills, you may take CJS offered at
most WorkForce Centers or the Skills Identification class at South Minneapolis
WorkForce Center
http://www.mnwfc.org/scripts/workshop_groups.plx?wfc_group=1
2. you have had a "recent" job interview - and have been doing
some networking at least with family and friends, you can come to the
Interviewing/Networking class W/O attending CJS first. If you are "new" to
networking or interviewing, then you need to attend CJS first.
Workshops
Do you want to know the secrets of a successful job search? The Minnesota
WorkForce Center-Hennepin South offers a series of workshops designed
to help you in your job search.
Creative Job Search (CJS) is the 1st in our workshop series.
CJS provides the foundation for the other workshops and should
be taken first.
This lively workshop incorporates all aspects of the job search
process. The Creative Job Search book, provided to each participant,
and on which this workshop is based, is a useful resource for those
seeking employment. The primary emphasis for this class is on skills
identification and presentation in resumes, interviewing, networking, etc.
In order to "sell yourself" to a prospective employer, it is necessary
to "know the product." Come and learn how to direct your job search
and market yourself for best results.
Hennepin South WorkForce Center offers an
Advanced, Internet Job Search which covers e-resumes and scannable
resumes and Resume Lab (should have basic
resume or know your skills or have taken Creative Job Search)
Resume/Cover Letter workshops at
other WorkForce Centers cover : why do you want a
resume? What do you put on a resume? Which resume format is best? Do
you need a scannable resume? What are your
strengths and skills? What goes in a cover letter? How do you send a
resume on the internet? Please bring a drafted resume to revise or a
list of your job skills.
- Behavioral Interviewing (formerly called Interview Success!)
It will be interactive and will cover interviewing in general
(e.g. checklist, (il)legal questions, dress, research, closing,
portfolio, references ...) and behavioral interviewing in more
depth (e.g. re: customer orientation, team work, communication,
problem solving, motivation, reliability, ability to do the
job, etc.).
- Networking and Interviewing
To gain maximum value from this workshop, Creative Job
Search workshop should be taken first as that workshop is the
foundation upon which this workshop is based.
This workshop ,
offered at other WorkForce Centers, will teach you to tap into the
hidden job market where over 80% of available jobs are never publicly
advertised. Also learn how to prepare for an interview so you present
yourself with poise and confidence. This workshop also covers frequently
asked interviewing questions, as well as offering tips on negotiation.

Tutorials
More and more jobs are requiring some computer knowledge. Tutorials
are simple, step by step, computerized training programs. Some tutorials
are available on the Internet, while others are available for use at
any one of the 20 computers in WorkForce Center-Hennepin South Resource
Area. While there are a number of tutorials on the Internet, the big
advantage of using the Resource Area tutorials is that the download time
is quicker as the tutorials are on the in-house system rather than downloading
off the Internet, which takes more time.
You are invited to use the following tutorials at this WorkForce Center:
- Guide to Basic Computer Operations (How to use the mouse)
- Mavis Beacon Typing/Data Entry (Learn/practice keyboarding).
Available on all of the WorkForce Center-Hennepin South Resource Area computers (also available in Spanish).
